Hi Friends,
By reading this blog post you will now possess two new things. We at messy magazine are handing you both the theme for our first issue and a deadline. You have exactly two weeks for contemplation and production. You have days to gather inspiration, compile it into any form that you wish, and focus on one day in particular….Monday.
Probably one of the most disliked days of the week. And that's why we, at messy magazine, have decided our first theme should encompass the raw emotions of such a talked about day. And there you have it, our first theme; Mad at Monday.
We want you to think of all the times that you had your shirt on backwards all day, you blew a tire on the way to school, you were busy at work with an after football hangover, get the idea? Chances are that day was a Monday. Tell us about it in any way you feel expresses your pure rage or general melancholy for that day that comes brutally after lazy Sundays and ruins everything. Everything.
Quick refresher on work suitable for submission:
TYPE: Pretty simple idea here; poems, short stories, serial stories that are used over several issues, essays, fiction and/or non-fiction work. This section will be theme based. If you are interested in writing a serial, please contact us for more information.
WEAR: The fashion section, both visual and written work; photos, photo essays, single photos, b/w, color, etc. Written work based on fashion, designers, local, regional, international. This section is not theme based; however, if you can pull off a theme based creation within this category you'll get a gold star!
SEE: Anything visual; including photos, photos essays, single photos, b/w, color, etc. (high resolution, please!), graphics, illustrations, paintings, prints, you name it. This section will be theme based.
HEAR: The music section, again, both visual and written work; photos, photo essays, single photos, b/w, color, etc. Written work based on music. Reviews, previews on albums, shows you attend, your own creations, etc. This section is not theme based, but if you can pull off a theme based creation within this category you'll get one more gold star!
Also, please remember our word count limit. Because we can't have people going gang-busters and submitting small novellas or a ton of photos in essay form, we must put a cap on our submissions. messy magazine has a 2,500 word count for written work and an 8 image limit on visual submissions. You can, however, submit as many times as you wish. If you are planning to submit a serial story, again, please contact us for further information.
Also, there are a few other things that need to be addressed:
1. You do not need to live in Cleveland in order to submit. messy magazine and its founders call Cleveland home and enjoy the city, but that does not mean that you, out-of-towner, will have your work excluded. messy magazine is open to all.
2. All work does not need to be theme related. The more the better for the literary and art section, but if you have anything else you wish to contribute please do so.
3. In regards to visual work. If you are submitting photos, please keep resolution in mind. Only high resolution (300dpi) will be accepted. If you are submitting visual work that is not a photograph, but instead a painting, sketch, or 3-D creation; please contact us for assistance in scanning or acquiring a mailing address.
Due date for Mad at Monday is (you guessed it) Monday, October 27, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. Please email messymagazine@gmail.com with your completed work and submission form (see below and please fill out attachment).
