what will make YOU stay? what IS making you stay? your answers matter.

(photo credit: 'why pittsburgh?!' an IWSI event that took place in september. we are the third city after detroit and pittsburgh to host an IWSI event)

From GP:

to all of my friends who think this is some sort of a joke- or that we are implying that everyone is leaving... please take a minute to think about the work we have put into an event that is different from anything you have ever been to.

love cleveland? yeah. so do i. how much? let's not get into that. my chances of finding what i think i really want are getting slimmer by the minute, but i'm here because i like it. i actually love it. everything about it. and i hope we realize that we are at a critical point in our city's history... and i don't want us to screw it up.

i have watched friends leave and never look back. i listen to constant negativity about the city and work day in and day out to turn this around. i am part of a network of midwestern cities that supports my work, sometimes more than my neighbors support my work. i am asking for your support because the event we are hosting tomorrow has a lot of potential.

you're staying in cleveland? i am too. and i'm going to write it on a piece of paper and have someone take a picture of me with it so i can send it downtown so people can stop TELLING me what i want and know what i actually want. that's what's behind this.

i am including copy from my news release. please try to open your mind to the possibilities instead of keeping it 'business as usual'...

what will make you stay? what IS making you stay? it's all part of it.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“I Will Stay If...” CLEVELAND Edition
A local event connected with GLUE’s “I Will Stay If…” campaign.

On Wednesday, November 18th, 2009, GLUE (Great Lakes Urban Exchange) invites you to join community members and leaders in a conversation about what makes a city sustainable, the continuing issues and challenges facing our city, and the new developments that are putting Cleveland on the map. What will make YOU stay? What IS making you stay? We want to know!

We invite all Clevelanders to join us for an evening of networking and idea-sharing. Co-sponsored by Cleveland365.com, this unique and high energy event will feature dynamic speakers and an interesting forum for young professionals and community members to talk about new and exciting happenings in Cleveland. Participants in the program include Matt Zone, Ward 17 Councilman and driving force behind the new Gordon Square Arts District; Randell McShepard, VP of Public Affairs at RPM International, Inc., co-founder and chairman of PolicyBridge; and Lillian A. Kuri, Program Director for Architecture, Urban Design and Sustainable Development for the Cleveland Foundation and key player in the Greater University Circle initiative.

The Great Lakes Urban Exchange (GLUE) was founded by a Pittsburgher and a Detroiter to catalyze conversations across Rust Belt communities about (among other things) the loss of population and sustainable economic activity. After two years of hosting multi-state conferences, building networks online, and creating opportunities for urbanists across the region to connect with a variety of policy and organizing experts, GLUE launched its “I Will Stay If…” (IWSI) campaign in Detroit earlier this summer. Pittsburgh’s event “Why Pittsburgh?” was held in September. (http://rustwire.com/2009/09/14/i-will-stay-if-comes-to-pittsburgh/) Cleveland is the third GLUE city to host an event and plans for similar parties in Buffalo and Milwaukee are in the works.

IWSI parties aim to bring together a diverse crowd of people in a GLUE city to participate in this vital conversation. In Cleveland, we want to know not only what will make you stay, but what is working for you already. Why are you here? How can we attract others like you? We are documenting the answers you give through a photographic exhibit that will travel our region. Eventually, GLUE will use the photographs as a non-traditional data set to share with policymakers. In the meantime, this event is an opportunity to celebrate everything that makes our city special, and the reasons we live here.

Cleveland’s own IWSI party, “I Will Stay If…” Cleveland Edition will take place at Speakeasy (1948 W. 25th Street-under the Bier Markt, 44113, http://speakeasy216.com) on Wednesday November 18 from 5:30 – 8:30 PM. Please join us and participate in the IWSI documentary project with acclaimed local photographers Bryon Miller and Suzanne Cofer. Food and drink specials are available to event participants. $5 suggested donations are welcome at the door. For more information about GLUE, please visit http://gluespace.org. To learn more about what’s behind IWSI, please visit http://iwillstayif.org. Call for Submissions! Issue 6 (one you don't have to vote on)

Hello messy magazine readers and friends!

With all that's been happening over the past few months (elections, bridges, casinos, wild things, etc., etc.) it's been a bit difficult to take a step back and just revel in the happenings of the past year. But we, the editors of messy magazine, have forced ourselves to take a break and let it all soak in. 2009 was the first FULL year of the magazine, and what a year it was!

All the ink stained fingers, spilled beers over strained eyes, sleepless nights and sunnyside pizza kept us moving, but it was you, the contributors and the readers who really kept us going in 2009.

Although our first issue was published in November/December of 2008, the gears of what makes messy magazine really move started turning in 2009. We asked you to dig down and create things from some rather off the wall themes like Emerge and See, The Happiest Lie, Mad at Monday and so on. Not only did you succeed, you blew us away!

So, when it came to the theme for issue 6, we decided to open the floor to you... meaning this time around there is NO THEME. We think you've jumped through enough of our hoops this year and now we want to see what kind of stuff you can bring to the table without a prompt. We also want you to take a look back at your own year in review and tell us about it. What was your favorite album? What was your new obsession? Favorite new restaurant? Concert? Movie? Festival? Theater performance? Shall we keep going? What did you do in 2009? Tell us!

Or, just send us something dear to you- something expressive and uniquely yours that you want to share. It's like an end of the year potluck- bring your own side dish and we'll provide the space and distribution!

We also encourage you to look through out past issues and select some of your favorite pieces. Let us know what you liked and we'll highlight some of our readers' favorites. We will be sharing our ultimate faves and we can all sit back and marvel at what we've made together in 2009.

Submissions will be due December 4th

and look for Issue 6 before the end of the year.

New folks- be sure to check the site for submission info- everyone else should know the drill!

Email us if you have questions.

And while you're not preparing your submissions for Issue 6, we hope to see you at the events below! Please say hello- and support our friends!

issue 5 'two sentence confession'

Happy Fall, friends!

It’s been quite sometime since we’ve talked to all of you. Sorry for the gap in communication, we promise to not be so quiet for so long again. But we do come today bringing good news and a gift. Issue 5 Two Sentence Confession’ is COMPLETE and ready for your eyes. A big thank you to all those brave souls who sent us confessions. This was a great issue to put together. Lots of cool content.

We’re not so sure where the influence came from on this one. Maybe it’s the fact that 150 character updates are defining our lives and telling us too much- or not enough- information about everyone in our virtual circle of friends. (shameless plug: follow us on Twitter. Join our facebook group. Thanks!) Or maybe it came from absurd stories of random break up and make up text messages, found Post-it notes, words scribbled in bathroom stalls (think Grog Shop)… we’re not sure. Check out the content inside issue 5, and let us know what you think. What’s your confession?

Also, be sure to check the Bridge Project down on the Detroit Superior Bridge this weekend!!

White Sangria - Summer Sippin'

Posted by: Kat Remick (http://kittenkaboom.wordpress.com/)
By The Sillie Bean Gourmet

This is my recipe for white sangria, or “giggle juice” as it was recently dubbed by my friend Lauren. Whatever you call it, it is damn tasty! Really you can use whatever fruit you prefer. Mango, cherries, blue berries, even banana. I used fresh berries not frozen because frozen berries tend to get mushy and look like brains (also brought to my attention by Lauren  )

Ingredients
• 1 bottle of white wine (Riesling, Albarino, Chablis, Gewurztraminer, Rioja, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc choose your favorite)

• 1 cup Peach Schnapps

• 1 cup Frozen peaches

• 1 cup Fresh strawberries

• 1 cup fresh raspberries

• 1 Kiwi sliced

• Optional ½ liter ginger ale

• Optional ¼ - ½ cup of sugar depending on your taste

1. Pour wine and Schnapps into a large pitcher.

2. Remove green stem from strawberries.

3. Add frozen peaches and fresh strawberries to the pitcher.

4. Peel kiwi and slice them and add the kiwi to the pitcher

5. Depending on how sweet you want your Sangria, add ¼- ½ cup of sugar. If you prefer it a bit
dryer then leave out the sugar.

6. Chill Sangria for at least an hour

7. Add ginger ale before serving. This is optional, but

8. Enjoy

Chocolate Covered Strawberry Rice Krispie© Treats

Posted by: Kat Remick
By The Sillie Bean Gourmet

3 Table spoons butter or margarine
1 (7 oz) jar of Strawberry Fluff©
6 cups of Rice Krispies©
1 cup of mini chocolate chips

I recently bought a huge box of Rice Krispies© because it had an awesome Star Trek Communicator inside (I fully admit that I am a big nerd.) The problem is that, while I am a fan of Snap, Crackle, and Pop, my husband and I are not the biggest fans of Rice Krispies© as a cereal. So I decided to make my first attempt at Rice Krispie© treats, but me being me I couldn’t make your run of the mill Rice Krispie treats. I had to tweak it in some way to make it unique to me. Enter the Strawberry Rice Krispie Treat! Then I realized that this was not an original idea. Enter the chocolate chips. I think you’ll find these to be easy and delicious. The novice cooks perfect desert. Here is how you can make your very own.

• Add entire contents of the jar of Strawberry fluff © into a large mixing bowel

• Add 3 tablespoons of butter into bowl and place bowl in the microwave.

• Microwave for 4 minutes. Take bowl out every minute and stir.

• Add 6 cups of Rice Krispies© Stir in the Rice Krispies until they are completely coated.

• Using a buttered spatula, empty the contents of the bowl into a 13x9x2 pan coated in cooking spray. What is a buttered spatula, you ask? Exactly what it sounds like. A spatula rubbed with
butter. Keeps the Rice Krispies© from sticking to it.

• Sprinkle the chocolate chips on top. Pat down with the spatula so that the chocolate chips are secure on the top. Don’t press down too hard because you don’t want the chips to melt too much.

• Allow treats to cool at room temperature for 15 minutes and then cut into 2 inch squares

• Treats are best in served the same day, but can kept in an air tight container for up to two days.

• To Freeze, layer treats separated by wax paper and place in an air tight container

50 Things To Do This Summer

By: Kat Remick

1. Make soap- Summer is the best time to make soap because a lot of the process needs to be well ventilated. There are tons of recipes online. Keep your eyes peeled in upcoming issues of Messy because this craft is on my to do list. Bonus, if you make enough you can give it to friends and family or you can sell and make a little extra summer cash.

2. Make a mixed cd- Compile a list of songs that remind you of summer, of being carefree, and just make you want to sing at the top of your lungs… then download those songs and burn them to a cd for your very own summer soundtrack.

3. Take a road trip- If you don’t have anywhere to drive, then go online and look up the most tourist places that are relatively nearby and drive there. Making sure of course to take a lot of pictures. Don’t have a lot of time? Pop in your summer soundtrack that you made and drive until it is done. Then turn around and start it all over again.

4. Eat dinner on the patio of a restaurant- Nothing better than a nice meal on a nice summer evening. Experiment, go somewhere you’ve never been. Try food you can’t pronounce or that you never thought you’d like. The worst thing that can happen is that you don’t like it… hey Mc Donald’s is always around the corner.

5. Perfect your breast stroke- I use to swim really well when I was a kid, but I haven’t really kept up with it. If you are like me or if you’ve never learned to swim… then take a class and do some laps. Its great aerobic exercise and you get to spend time outdoors in the cool water and the warm sun. SIGN ME UP!

6. Bedazzle a squirt gun and keep it loaded- Get some stick on jewel from your favorite craft store, get some super glue or use your glue gun and glue those bad boys on! Load up your kick ass new squirt gun and point it at anything that moves…. Or doesn’t! Just don’t hit my husband he hates it.

7. Spend the day in your bathing suit- When you’re on vacation somewhere tropical you’re at the beach or the pool 90% of time and walk around in your bathing suit… so get into that lazy days of summer mentality by putting on your bathing suit and hanging around the house or apartment.

8. Make freshly squeezed lemonade- F the powder crap! Buy some lemons, water, sugar, and a sprig of mint. Invite a friend over and catch up on old times.

9. Make a skirt- Sure you can buy a cute summer skirt, but why do that when you can make your very own unique frock that will set you apart from the rest of the flock! Go to your favorite craft store and get a couple yards of your favorite fabric and find a pattern for your favorite style of skirt and follow the directions to your very own tailored to you garment. Or create your own pattern. Pick up the book “Sew What! Skirts: 16 Simple Styles You Can Make with Fabulous Fabrics” by Francesca DenHartog at either your local library or bookstore. This book is awesome and it teaches you how to make a pattern from scratch.

10. Read a trashy romance novel- There is just something about reading about heaving bosoms to put you in a silly mood which is exactly the mood you should be in during the summer. Put down the copy of the Grapes of Wrath… you can pick it up again once the leaves fall. Trashy romance not your style? Perhaps some “chick lit”? Or comic books? If none of those appeals to you pick up a book by Christopher Moore…he’ll have you lol-ing in no time ;)

11. Go to a fair- Go to fairs, festivals, and parades. Go to lots of them. Go to ones that celebrate music, like regeafest, or ones that celebrate your culture like the Irish cultural festival, or ones that transport you to another place like Medieval Faire… Whatever it’s a celebration of, it is Fun in the sun for a couple of hours. That’s fun with a capitol F!

12. Go to a Farmers Market- Fresh yummy vegetables and supporting local farmers! I am all about killing two birds with one stone…not literally of course.

13. Send postcards to loved ones without going anywhere- Post cards are a short a sweet way to say hi to loved ones and a great way to advertise your city. Pick up some postcards that emphasis the coolest parts of your city. Jot down a note and mails them out to friends a family, who knows maybe you will inspire them to take a roadie to come and see you. Plus you are supporting the Post office, they need our help.

14. Refurbish a piece of furniture- take that old beat up desk, or coffee table, grab a can of paint, and a paint brush and turn it into a brand new piece. You may need to sand it down first…look up some tips from the pros on line. Don’t have a piece of old furniture to fix up? Go dumpster diving aka trash picking… or drive by the rich streets of your city on garbage day… One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

15. Paint a self portrait- Maybe you aren’t the next Frida Kahlo or Vincent Van Gogh…SO WHAT. Look in the mirror and paint what you see or what you want to see… If it comes out jumbled mess, at least it’s your jumbled mess.

16. Make an anklet- Hop into the car or on to your bike, yet again, and ride down to your favorite craft store. Pick up jewelry wire, beads and jewelry claps and string up your very own anklet. Wear with pride.

17. Wear a toe ring- Toe rings aren’t very comfortable crammed into shoes, so take this opportunity of warm weather to don some flip flops or sandals and decorate those little piggies.

18. Paint your toe nails the colors of the rainbow- Now that you have let those piggys out into the open it’s time to decorate them some more. Paint toe nails make me smile. Sure you can paint them all one color…OR you can paint them multiple colors…green, red, blue, yellow, purple, orange, black, white, teal, and hot pink! This is sure to put a smile on your face every time you look down.

19. Train for a 5k- Exercise is boring. Most people do it for fitness which can only motivate you so far. But you can make it fun by making it about a specific goal. A 5k is a great start. It’s a little over 3 miles and totally doable for even the novice runner. Before you know it you will be running marathons...or not…

20. Go through your closets/ have a swap meet with friends- Remember that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure thing I said a few numbers back…well it applies to friends too. You know that awesome black cardigan you have been eyeing in your best friends closet, well maybe she’s sick of it. Maybe she really wants that awesome pair of heels that pinch your feet. Go through your closets pull out the stuff that doesn’t fit or that you don’t want anymore. Have your friends do the same and then go through the bags. Maybe you want find anything that you want, but you could leave with a whole new wardrobe. And at least you will have made room for more clothes .

21. Go to a Roller Derby- Girls in skimpy outfits knocking each other down… Sounds like fun to me. There are 40 Roller Derbies teams that make up the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association in the United States. There could be one near you and if there isn’t, use this as an opportunity to take that roadie.

22. Go skinny dipping- This pretty much speaks for its self… I’ve never done it, but as soon as I get the opportunity…

23. Plant a vegetable garden- This will really only work if you have enough land to do in. But if you don’t own a house with a white picket fence don’t despair! Start a community garden or get in on one already established in your neighborhood. Don’t like vegetables? Give them away to family, friends, or homeless shelters.

24. Make strawberry lemonade cupcakes- Buy a box of strawberry cake mix and lemon frosting. Follow the directions for the cupcake recipe and BAM! Your very own slice of summer heaven.

25. Make Limoncello- Follow my awesome recipe in the upcoming issue (Issue 5) of Messy Magazine.

26. Shuck corn- Then boil, slather on butter, salt and pepper and enjoy!

27. Shuck responsibility for a day and go to the beach instead- We all need a mental health day to recoup. So call off (or do the responsible thing and request off) and run to the closest body of water…lake, ocean, or pool. Spend the day listening to music, reading magazines or reading a book. Make sure to wear sunscreen and bring a snack.

28. Keep a journal/ blog- I have a journal…it’s mostly full of lists. I feel better when I take all the stuff I need to do and write it down. It sort of releases the burden. See your journal or blog to vent your frustrations or express your joy. This is your place to empty all your thoughts and keep track of all the great things you are doing this summer.

29. Build a sandcastle- Purchase a few plastic pales and shovels and build a gigantic sandcastle. Takes lots of pictures. Then destroy it like you are Godzilla and it is a small Japanese village…OR leave it up for others to marvel at.

30. Go to small independently owned bars/ Dives and see live local music- Cleveland is an excellent place for local music. And believe it or not I bet the places you live are brimming with local talent even if you don’t live in a huge city. You just have to keep your eyes open and for the price of a ticket to the movies (sometimes less) you can rock out, discover something new, support local business, support local artists and meet new and interesting people. Then if your favorite local band makes it someday, you can boast that you knew them way back when.

31. Make popsicles using your ice tray- try different flavors mix and match your favorite juices. For a something different try combining coffee, milk, and sugar. Pour into ice trays and stick in the freezer. Wait until they start to freeze and then stick the popsicle stick into the center of each cube, then place them back in the freezer and then enjoy. Or you can buy one of those neat contraptions that are specially made for making popsicles.

32. Wear a flower in your hair- Real or fake, wearing a flower in your hair is great way to get in the summer spirit.

33. Lay in the grass- Make sure it hasn’t been raining or you might become a muddy mess, but feeling the cool grass on your body on a warm summer day is like a little piece of heaven.

34. Play with sparklers- I don’t know about you, but when I was a kid this was the ultimate in fun! Like Fireworks without the noise. Grab you friends and a lighter and spark those babies up. Write your name in the air or write words in the air and see if your friends can guess what you wrote. Or just looks at the pretty and colorful sparks. But be safe.

35. Mosey on up to the window of a small seasonal ice cream shack- My favorite is getting the soft serve in a cone and getting the dip… Chocolate soft serve with the cherry dip is the best if you can find it!

36. Dip your feet in the closest body of water- Walk along the beach, dip your toes in the pool or fill up the bath tub and dangle your feet over the side…just make sure you feel that cool water on your little piggies.

37. Take pictures of you and your friends enjoying the summer- Make sure to capture all your shenanigans on film, in case you need a reminder that the sun does actually shine, once winter hits.

38. Drink ice tea on your porch or stoop- Invite a friend over and sit on your porch or stoop and people watch. No people to be found? Go to a park or a local coffee shop with an outside patio. These are great places to people watch.

39. Go to a garage sale- it’s that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure thing again! You can really find some awesome stuff, either in excellent condition or in need of some creative refurbishing.

40. Play in the sprinklers- You don’t have wear your bathing suit…hell you don’t even need to own a sprinkler. Run by any sprinkler you see and let the water get ya! It’s just water and it will dry. Find your inner child. It’s summer.

41. Do tourist things in your own town and discover where you live- This summer I went on The Goodtime III in Cleveland, my hometown. The Goodtime III is a boat ride that takes you down the Cuyahoga River and on to Lake Erie. I learned a little bit about my city and enjoyed a lovely boat ride around the city. Find the cool things to do in your city and do them! Get out of your everyday routine.

42. Have a potluck barbeque with friends- Have all your friends make a dish and then get together either at your place, the beach or a nearby park and chow down while enjoying the company of your friends and the warm summer nights.

43. Have a Jam session- This was inspired by my family. My uncles all play guitar and when the
family gets together the guitars come out, the bongos come out, the harmonica comes out and its music time. Can’t play an instrument? No problem sing a long instead! Can’t sing, not that it matters, then just sit back and enjoy!

44. Count butterflies- This one was inspired by my mother. She is a lepidopterist, which means she studies butterflies. She counts butterflies several times a week at Dike 14 Nature Preserve in Downtown Cleveland (This area is only open to the general public twice a year check out this website for details. http://www.dike14.org/.) She notices butterflies all the time, often when I don’t. So if you’re like me, open your eyes! Notice the world around you and count how many butterflies you find.

45. Go fishing- I have never done this before, but I’ve always wanted to. My aunt says there is nothing like the feeling you get when you catch your first fish. If you are lucky enough to accomplish this, score! Dinner! If you don’t like fish, don’t fret you can throw it back or give it away.

46. Cut a pair of jeans into shorts- Recently my favorite pair of jeans formed a huge hole near the crotch. Hot, I know. My solution? Cut the legs off and make them into shorts. Now they are my favorite pair of jean shorts.

47. Make a friendship bracelet- Remember when you were young and you took the embroidery thread and braided it or knotted it into a bracelet? Well I do and it was a relaxing way of killing an hour. Multi task. Do it while watching TV or while you’re a passenger during a roadie. Give the final product to your best friend.

48. Make sangria- My favorite is white Sangria! Check out my recipe at http://messymagazine.blogspot.com/

49. Play on the swing set- Go to the closest park. Put your ass in the swing and pump your legs till your worries disappear. And when you get high enough jump off with eyes wide open!

50. Write your own 50 things to do list for summer - And then do them! So what if it’s August! Summer ain’t over till the leaves fall.

Interview: Doctor Rosen Rosen on his latest remixed album "It's Not Me It's....Doctor Rosen Rosen"

You know what I love? Remixes. I am super into remixes. But what I love even more than just any old remix is a remix done well. What is a well done remix you ask? One that doesn’t turn a song into a speeding hyper-driven repetitious nightmare where I feel like my cd is skipping, skipping, skipping....This summer; I've lucked out as far as remixes are concerned. One of my favorite albums this summer season has been, Lily Allen’s ”It’s not Me, It’s You.” It’s fun, it’s catchy, it keeps me content while I sit, sweating in rush hour traffic. And like a kid with ADD I was more than ecstatic to find out the album was completely remixed by Doctor Rosen Rosen. Who doesn’t love a fresh twist on a good thing, especially when it sounds great?

I had heard about this project sometime ago when I found the Doctor Rosen Rosen remix for Lily Allen’s song ‘Never Gonna Happen,’ and then got word that the entire album would also be released. (Check it out and download it free @ http://doctorrosenrosen.com/) Because the haunting, eerie remix for ‘Never Gonna Happen’ stayed lodged in my head for quite sometime, I was determined to find more music by Doctor Rosen Rosen and couldn’t have been more please with what I uncovered. Catchy self-released originals with mucho 80’s synths and dirty dance beats (check out ‘Names’ off of the Volume I, Brooklyn Instrumental and ’Weekends’) landed on my Ipod next to emotion evoking remixes (check out Department of Eagles ‘1997’ remix).

Doctor Rosen Rosen released his full remixed album entitled “It’s not Me It’s… Doctor Rosen Rosen” on his blog July 20, 2009. Since then over 5,500 people have gone and downloaded this awesome album. I recently chatted with the Doctor to learn more about the guy behind the music.

mm: So I have been doing so researching on you and I must say I'm quite intrigued. I was very intrigued after I listened to the Phoenix ‘Lisztomania’ remix as well as the Department of Eagles ‘1997’ remix. I can't seem to stop listening to either. I think you certainly have found a niche sound that you can call your own. What I'm interested in knowing is how the 80 influence comes in to play. I’ve read quite a bit about you being inspired by Prince?
Doctor Rosen Rosen: Is it that obvious? Hands down, Prince is my favorite artist of all time. I was the kid who had a picture of Prince in his locker in 7th grade. My first guitar was neon yellow because of Prince.

mm: I think that's awesome. He's an amazing guitar player and amazing overall musician. Was the guitar your first instrument? (And I can listen to Purple Rain on repeat for days and days)

Doctor Rosen Rosen: Pretty much. I took Piano lessons when I was around 10, but didn't really get into making music until I got that yellow electric guitar for my 13th birthday. (purple rain = MASTERPIECE)

mm: How did that lead to mixing and remixing? It sounds like this is somewhat a new thing that has come up within the past year and a half to two years. [Doctor Rosen Rosen was previously in the band The Handsome Public, based out of NYC. He did all the keyboards, production and split vocals with bandmate/friend Vickers Bastard Gringo.] Certainly a solid year and half on the books, though.

Doctor Rosen Rosen: Yeah, in high school I started learning more about multi-track recording and using computers, drum machine, and synthesizers to make music. Gradually, this became my focus (I stopped playing guitar regularly). So I've been making electronic music for over 14 years it's just I had never done a remix until the last year. A friend of mine suggested I try to remix Katy Perry's ‘I Kissed A Girl’ sort of as a joke/challenge. I posted it on YouTube and it got a ton of hits... so I was like... hmmm this might be a good way to get my name out there. Now I really enjoy remixes.

mm:I think it’s something that is certainly current and in demand especially with sites like rcrdlbl.com and the millions of music blogs. I know I always enjoy finding songs I love and hearing them in a different format based on different influences and styles. And mash-up artists are obviously huge now, too. So I guess in a sense it's sort of like the Pop Art movement for music.

Doctor Rosen Rosen: Yeah. To be honest I'm pretty new to the whole "remix culture" and hopefully that has something to do with my success. I approach each remix as an opportunity to 1. Bring something new to the song 2. Showcase my musical voice. 3. Make it accessible / enjoyable to people ears.

mm: Very cool. I have one more question before I want to talk about the Lily Allen project; or actually two. How did you get involved with the Chris Cornell remix (listen to it at http://doctorrosenrosen.com/main/?p=132 )?

Doctor Rosen Rosen: The Chris Cornell remix is the first official major label remix I did. An A&R guy from Interscope found me on Hype Machine and sent me an email. I was so excited to work on that track because the original was produced by Timbaland. So in the back of my mind I was thinking "I got to make this better than Timbaland did"... because I look up to him so much.

mm: Nice! It’s great to see that putting yourself out there on sites like hype, last.fm, and even twitter can yield positive results.

mm: On your original material (Instrumental Volume 1: Brooklyn, Weekends, Eat Pray FU*K, etc.) are you singing the vocals?

Doctor Rosen Rosen: Anything that is not a remix that is on my site or myspace (http://www.myspace.com/drrosenrosenmusic) is my original material-- It is me singing.

mm: So onto the Lily Allen album.

Doctor Rosen Rosen: Yeah definitely

mm: This project originally started with the remixes of four songs, and then it kept building? When did they idea of the whole album come into play?

Doctor Rosen Rosen: Actually, I decided to do the whole album the second I heard that all of the parts were available... Once I started the project though, I hit a wall after about 4 remixes and was stuck creatively for about a month.

mm:What were the first four songs?

Doctor Rosen Rosen: 1.’Who'd Of Know’ 2.’Back To the Start’ 3.’The Fear’ 4.’Not Fair’

mm:Was the roadblock something where the songs styles weren't matching? It’s pretty seamless, sound-wise. “Back to the Start” is pretty upbeat in comparison to the rest; but over all I think it's a seamless album.

Doctor Rosen Rosen: Actually the roadblock was I was afraid the songs would sound too alike. So I think I was trying to take some of the songs into more "poppy" areas, but I kept coming back to this darker sound. Once I stopped fighting it and just went with my gut... the creative juices started flowing again. I'm glad the record (for the most part) has a sound, and isn't all over the place.

mm: It totally does have it’s own sound. It’s seamless, but I wouldn't say it’s matchy matchy. Overall what you have done totally fits the lyrics that she has presented. The album as a whole has a much more vulnerable, raw sound than her original LP. I think you kind of bring more of the emotion out of the lyrics. 'Never Gonna Happen' is so eerie. It’s almost haunting.

Now I catch myself on several songs going back and really listening to the lyrics and paying much more attention to them. You've really brought them out, where as on the original I’m jamming along because the beats are fun and I’m just singing along not paying too much attention.

Doctor Rosen Rosen: ‘Never Gonna Happen’ is definitely one of my favorites. I really love those lyrics and I think they become so much more potent with the eerie backdrop I put them on.

mm: Totally. Even ‘The Fear’ and ‘22’ emit much more emotion than the originals. I’ve been catching myself having to rewind and really listen to these lyrics when I'm driving around and then going saying ‘holy crap!’

Doctor Rosen Rosen: Ha!

mm: And Perez Hilton even posted something about you too?

Doctor Rosen Rosen: Yeah, Perez really got the ball rolling with one Tweet...

mm: That's incredible. The power of Perez Hilton, it’s shocking.

mm: And now you're remixing your remixes with people's comments? Can you tell me about that?

Doctor Rosen Rosen: Yeah just started doing that... kind of a fun way to try to engage people…that is until Lily Allen leaves a message.

mm:Will you remix each song?

Doctor Rosen Rosen: As the voicemails come it I'm gonna post them.

mm:And she hasn't left a message yet, I'm shocked! She must know by now.

Doctor Rosen Rosen: Then I will flood the internet with her voicemail remixed 1,000 different ways

mm: Where did you get the idea to integrate voicemail messages? Any drunk messages?

Doctor Rosen Rosen: I was trying to think of something fun and I got an email from Google inviting me to use Google Voice. No drunk messages yet.

mm:I want to go back to the making of the album, where did the inspiration come from? I know you wanted it to be a bit darker, which you achieved. But as far as starting each song, did you focus on the lyrics first, the original music, how did building process start?

Doctor Rosen Rosen: The first step for me is getting the vocals on a timeline set to the proper tempo. Once that is set up I'll loop a phrase I like and start trying to find a melody or bassline that seems to fit. I tried to NOT listen to the original arrangements unless I got really stuck. So for the most part the songs are totally inspired by her lyrics or tone of her voice or emotion in her voice.

mm: Did hear the album prior to making the record?

Doctor Rosen Rosen: Yeah, I listened to it once all of the way through. I got to say I'm a big fan of Gre Kurstin who produced all of the tracks. I never imported the CD into my Itunes though, just kept it in my car

mm:Interesting. And you are a producer yourself, correct? Is that your full time gig?

Doctor Rosen Rosen: Right now I'm a full time musician whether I'm remixing, producing tracks for myself, or producing tracks for other artists it is all good :)

mm: So what's on the horizon for you? Are you playing any shows? Do you play out in LA a lot?

Doctor Rosen Rosen: I just started putting together a new show that will focus much more on my production/remix work, that I will start playing out in September. Other than that, I've been working on a lot of collaborations that you will hopefully start to see soon (I don't want to jinx anything though) and there will be a ton of new remixes in the next few months.

mm:Are you looking for a label to carry you? Or are you planning on a self release?

Doctor Rosen Rosen: Well the remix work will show up on various labels, as far as my own work, my team and I are still navigating those waters... It would obviously be amazing to stay independent-- but at the same time there are some labels doing pretty exciting things we'll see.

mm: Good to hear. Well, I think you're doing a fine job self promoting! Is there anything I haven't covered that the world should know about Doctor Rosen Rosen?

Doctor Rosen Rosen: Ha! Thanks so much. I drink way too much Mt. Dew... I don't know why they haven't sponsored me yet.

mm:
HAHAHA! Maybe with time.
