THEME 2 and holiday fun!

Hello Loves,

We're back, and jumping into the New Year with our second issue, fresh goals and some tricks up our sleeves. Thank you to everyone who contributed to Mad at Monday. Our first issue was a great success!

messy magazine is here to present you with your next challenge: our theme for issue two. We hope you are up for it, getting stretched out, warmed up and prepared!

Issue two's theme was created over many a gchat about the year end, the year beginning, all the fun looking back and forward that comes with it, the likes and the dislikes. But issue two is not about 2008, nor is it about 2009 (but if can be if you want!). It's about what you love, what you like, what you lost or wish you can lose.

So here is the official title for issue numero two:
Love it. Like it. Lose it.

Tell us anything you wish, superficial or profound, anything and everything goes. As usual, we want you, your thoughts, and your friends. So spill it.

For more information on submission types, our quick refresher can be found on our website. Go to www.messymagazine.org and click on submit for more details!

Submissions for Issue two, Love it. Like it. Lose it. are due Monday, December 21, 2008 by midnight. Please send works to info@messymagazine.org or submit online at our website.

Issue two will be out January 15, 2009 in an email box near you!

As always, if you have any questions please contact us!

monday, monday, ba da, ba da da da.

Anyone notice the drastic temperature change this week? Looks like winter is on its way well before the end of um, fall. Where's fall? It's about to snow and the leaves are green. If you haven't noticed a temperature change, consider us jealous.

Anyways, speaking of seasons, and calendars and days, we're sending out a little reminder because submissions are due soon! And by soon, we mean Monday. To those of you who have already submitted, thank you and we owe you all a beer. Or three. To those who haven't, the deadline for the inaugural issue of messy magazine is Monday, October 27, 2008. The first issue will be distributed on November 15, 2008, in an inbox near you.

Also be on the look out for our new website - coming soon!

For those of you who are friends with us on Facebook or Myspace (thank you for your support!) or found out about us through a forwarded email, please sign up for our email list on right next to this post!

Remember, you do not need to live in Cleveland in order to submit. messy magazine and its founders call Cleveland home and enjoy the city, but that does not mean that you, out-of-towner, will have your work excluded. messy magazine is open to all.

All work does not need to be theme related. The more the better for the literary and art section, but if you have anything else you wish to contribute please do so.

In regards to visual work. If you are submitting photos, please keep resolution in mind. Only high resolution (300dpi) will be accepted. If you are submitting visual work that is not a photograph, but instead a painting, sketch, or 3-D creation; please contact us for assistance in scanning or acquiring a mailing address.

So, for the sake of reinstating, the theme of the first issue is MAD AT MONDAY.

We want you to think of all the times that you spilled coffee on your Mac book, had your shirt on backwards all day, blew a tire on the way to school, you were busy at work with an after football hangover, get the idea? Chances are that day was a Monday. Tell us about it in any way you feel expresses your pure rage or general melancholy for the day that comes brutally after lazy Sundays and ruins everything. Everything.

Due date for Mad at Monday is (you guessed it) Monday, October 27, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. Please email messymagazine@gmail.com with your completed work and submission form (see below).

Calling for Submissions! Our first theme!

October 12, 2008

Hi Friends,

By reading this blog post you will now possess two new things. We at messy magazine are handing you both the theme for our first issue and a deadline. You have exactly two weeks for contemplation and production. You have days to gather inspiration, compile it into any form that you wish, and focus on one day in particular….Monday.

Probably one of the most disliked days of the week. And that's why we, at messy magazine, have decided our first theme should encompass the raw emotions of such a talked about day. And there you have it, our first theme; Mad at Monday.

We want you to think of all the times that you had your shirt on backwards all day, you blew a tire on the way to school, you were busy at work with an after football hangover, get the idea? Chances are that day was a Monday. Tell us about it in any way you feel expresses your pure rage or general melancholy for that day that comes brutally after lazy Sundays and ruins everything. Everything.

Quick refresher on work suitable for submission:

TYPE: Pretty simple idea here; poems, short stories, serial stories that are used over several issues, essays, fiction and/or non-fiction work. This section will be theme based. If you are interested in writing a serial, please contact us for more information.

WEAR: The fashion section, both visual and written work; photos, photo essays, single photos, b/w, color, etc. Written work based on fashion, designers, local, regional, international. This section is not theme based; however, if you can pull off a theme based creation within this category you'll get a gold star!

SEE: Anything visual; including photos, photos essays, single photos, b/w, color, etc. (high resolution, please!), graphics, illustrations, paintings, prints, you name it. This section will be theme based.

HEAR: The music section, again, both visual and written work; photos, photo essays, single photos, b/w, color, etc. Written work based on music. Reviews, previews on albums, shows you attend, your own creations, etc. This section is not theme based, but if you can pull off a theme based creation within this category you'll get one more gold star!

Also, please remember our word count limit. Because we can't have people going gang-busters and submitting small novellas or a ton of photos in essay form, we must put a cap on our submissions. messy magazine has a 2,500 word count for written work and an 8 image limit on visual submissions. You can, however, submit as many times as you wish. If you are planning to submit a serial story, again, please contact us for further information.

Also, there are a few other things that need to be addressed:

1. You do not need to live in Cleveland in order to submit. messy magazine and its founders call Cleveland home and enjoy the city, but that does not mean that you, out-of-towner, will have your work excluded. messy magazine is open to all.

2. All work does not need to be theme related. The more the better for the literary and art section, but if you have anything else you wish to contribute please do so.

Messy Magazine: Call for Submissions!

Tap, tap, tap...is this thing on??

Hello All,

First off, welcome to the new messy magazine blog! We're glad to have you.

A few of you, through conversations and various associations will know almost all of the information below. A few of you may not, but that does not mean that you are not one of the special ones. You wouldn't be reading this if you weren't special. Basically, it is time for some of the best and brightest, creative minds of Cleveland to come together and be heard. We feel we can do that. Well actually, we know that we can. But we need you. *Insert segue to make donations HERE.* Haha, just kidding.

We, as in my friends and I, are starting a literary/art/music/photography/whatever-that-issue-needs-to-be-at-the-moment magazine called messy magazine. The basis of the magazine revolves around theme inspired work. Each month we will send out a theme in an email letter (just like this one!). You take that theme and you create whatever-it-is you do. Fast forward two weeks, you submit via email whatever-it-is you have created, preferably with an explanation (if necessary) to messy magazine.

Currently, messy magazine is an email magazine (e-mag). This will be emailed to you in PDF form; there will be a companion, a blog, under the same name that will be updated daily. The blog will be essentially your creations and free reign on events that happen in and affect the Cleveland area.

Submissions will be used in the magazine, on the blog or in future issues...your work will not be wasted, if anything, you know it will be read/seen and that automatically means that your ideas have come into fruition and are being shared with someone other than your notebook. So here's what we need from you:

Work that will fit into the the following categories:

TYPE: Pretty simple idea here; poems, short stories, serial stories that are used over several issues, essays, fiction and/or non-fiction work. This section will be theme based. If you are interested in writing a serial, please contact us for more information.

WEAR: The fashion section. Both visual and written work. Photos, photo essays, single photos, b/w, color, etc. Written work based on fashion, designers, local, regional, international. This section is not theme based, however, if you can pull off a theme based creation within this category you'll get a gold star!

SEE: Anything visual; including photos, photos essays, single photos, b/w, color, etc.(high resolution, please!), graphics, illustrations, paintings, prints, you name it. This section will be theme based.

HEAR: The music section. Again, both visual and written work. Photos, photo essays, single photos, b/w, color, etc. Written work based on music. Reviews, previews on albums, shows you attend, your own creations, etc. This section is not theme based, but if you can pull off a theme based creation within this category you'll get one more gold star!

Please note: Because we can't have people going gang-busters and submitting small novellas or a ton of photos in essay form, we must put a cap on our submissions. messy magazine has a 2,500 word count for written work and an 8 image limit on visual submissions. You can, however, submit as many times as you wish. If you are planning to submit a serial story, again, please contact us for further information.

Basically, we want the mind that sits at a desk for 8 hours a day, takes the kids to school, delivers pizza, tries to sell art to make a living, waits tables, and/or whatever else makes you have something to say. Since that's you; you have no excuse. Sorry.

We want your feedback, we want your friends (please forward!), but first we need your material. So please send us your musings, your gripes, your masterpieces. We will listen and you will be heard. Just please remember us when we ask you to listen. Look for our first theme, submission letter with due date, to be emailed to you and posted to the blog in the next few days.

Let's do this guys, it's time. No excuses. Remember Cleveland, there's always this year.

Yours in fame, fortune, god forbid, destitution, and a winning or losing season,

The Staff at messy magazine

P.S. It's okay to tell people you know us, it might get you somewhere.
